How to Dress Like Meghan Markle

When American actress Meghan Markle joined the British Royal Family in 2016, going on to marry Prince Harry, the youngest son of Princess Diana, she was met with a fair number of critics. From her past as a some-what raunchy actress in the hit series Suits, to her celeb-like status in the US, many Brits assumed she might not be quite up to the task as the newly appointed Duchess of Sussex.

Since their Royal wedding in 2018, Meghan has continued to prove her critics entirely incorrect. From breaking down barriers between the Royals and the British public (by offering out actual hugs to some children who were lined up to meet them) to creating a new Royal dress-code all of her own (much like her would-be mother-in-law did), Meghan clearly makes up her own rules.

As recently as last October, during a trip to New Zealand, Australia and Fiji, Meghan and Harry broke protocol by agreeing to a selfie with some waiting fans!

Wearing trousers more than any other Royal before her, daring to opt for all-black looks for any event she pleases and not just funerals, and revealing her knees in a risqué mini black dress (that was totally amazing, by the way), Meghan has redefined what it means to be a British Royal in this modern day and the public are absolutely loving it.

So, fancy achieving a little of Meghan’s style credentials for yourself?

No problem, just continue reading below!

Yes, you heard us right!

So, let’s dive in.

Casual Dress

You might think that Ms. Markle is never seen in casual dress these days. And, to be fair, you’re kind of right. Casual no longer means sweatpants or leggings and a t-shirt for the new British Duchess. However, her version of casual is a slightly more day-to-day appropriate vibe and a break from her red-carpet show stoppers.

Although seen from time to time in a pair of ripped blue jeans, Meghan’s casual stance is usually slightly dressier than this. She often opts for more casual dresses (and even mini dresses) from brands, such as Aquazzura, black skinny jeans, and ditches the staple heeled suede pumps for flat pumps or loafers.

The one thing that Meghan’s casual style is always finished with is the right jacket. From Burberry trench coats and Alexander McQueen blazers to leather biker jackets, her stylish choices always take any casual outfit from 0 to 100 instantly, proving the importance of investing in good quality coats and jackets.

Choose designer, high-quality jackets from Shop It To Me and you can nail the dressed-down Meghan Markle look with ease. Simply pair with skinny black jeans, nude loafers or Stuart Weitzman boots and add a chic Strathberry crossbody bag.

If you really want to copy the Duchess’ style, wear your crossbody right over the body – but we can’t promise you’ll cause as much uproar as she did when she did this for the first time. Another style choice that goes directly against the typical Royal protocol.

In case designer fashion isn’t really your style, she has also been known to indulge in high street brands, such as J-Crew when Meghan wore a jacket from the brand for occasions as important as the Royal tour. So, if it’s good enough for Meghan, it’s probably worth checking out, right?!

Sporting Events

Meghan has been no stranger to a sporting event or two since her entrance into the royal limelight. From London’s Wimbledon to the Invictus Games, where she made her first public appearance with The Duke of Sussex himself and even a polo match or two, she knows exactly what to wear when it comes to these types of events.

Dressier than her casual looks and still eternally polished, she’s relatable and with the help of a crisp shirt and wide-leg trousers, she has managed to forge a staple look that we (and the rest of the world) adores.

Here, brands like Ralph Lauren and Burberry really come into their own. They’re classic, yet modern and eternally stylish. Sporty casual with a polished twist. Which works so well for the signature Meghan style.

If you’re looking to pull off a look like Meghan here, go for a crisp shirt (stripes always work here) and wide-leg pants that elongate the leg, look effortlessly chic but remain comfortable all day long.

Create the look with the designers that Meghan loves and actually wears for a fraction of the price simply using the Shop It To Me platform, helping you to find designer deals in your size as soon as they hit the sales.

Wedding Guest

Her wedding dress was one of the most highly anticipated moments in recent fashion history and Meghan didn’t disappoint. Donning a design from Givenchy artistic director, Clare Waight Keller, the former actress stunned in an off-the-shoulder, duchess satin gown that fit to perfection.

But Meghan Markle is not only good at dressing for her own wedding. Since joining the Royal family, we’ve seen her attend many a wedding and each and every outfit just gets better and better.

We’ve seen Megan wowing in everything from a simple monochrome shirt midi dress, courtesy of Club Monaco, and particularly royal-looking structured navy Givenchy dress and coat combination to floral bohemian-inspired looks and lots of color. When it comes to dressing as a wedding guest, Meghan does it all.

Key rules for her looks are; understated, elegant and not too tight!

Here are just a few key dresses that perfectly fit into the Meghan Markle wedding guest style vibe.

Red Carpet

Lastly, we simply had to look into Meghan’s red-carpet style because she just does it so well.  She loves modest necklines and tends to show off her sculpted arms. But she also plays around with length, not always choosing to go for predictable full-length, like her new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. Plus, the hair and makeup are always low-key and ultra-chic. If anyone can do that no-makeup makeup look, it’s Meghan.

From Oscar De La Renta and Dior to Carolina Herrera and Erdem, flowing gowns with lots of fabric and movement and a little extra structure up top are Meghan’s favorites. Think pleats, bow details, asymmetric necklines and any color you fancy!

Here are just a few ideas that remind us of Meghan’s red-carpet style.

Now serving as Vice President for Queen Elizabeth’s Commonwealth Trust and a lead for this year’s Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey, Meghan has clearly been entrusted with the Royal seal of approval as well as style icon status - from the Queen and the rest of the world!
