Ankle length is a popular style of jeans that are just long enough to clip the ankle, putting a slight hint of leg on display. Most ankle jeans are skinny, with a little bit of stretch. The inseam on a regular length pair of ankle jeans is usually between 27 inches and 29 inches. But, petite and tall lengths are available as well. Ankle jeans are not to be confused with cropped jeans, which tend to be cut a bit higher on the leg.
As we often do, we have Audrey Hepburn, and other trendsetters of her era, to thank for the ankle skimming pant leg. While she didn’t sport the denim look, which came way after her time, the basic silhouette was popularized by her wardrobe both in real life and on the silver screen.
You might be surprised to learn that ankle length pants are a sore spot for some fashionistas. There is a school of thought that contends that this length is unflattering for most women, especially those without supermodel-like proportions. But, we’re willing to bet that will all the styles, lengths, and rises of ankle jeans available that there is a flattering option out there for just about everybody.
The biggest thing to pay attention to when selecting a pair of ankle jeans is length. You want to find a pair that skims the ankle, showing off the tops of your feet and a bit of leg. Next is silhouette. Slim or skinny ankle jeans are much more flattering than a pant leg that isn’t tapered. (Flared or wide ankle length pants can make the legs look short.) Beyond that, you have your pick of color, wash and rise. High waist ankle jeans are on trend, as are distressed and cuffed styles. To maximize the “ankle” look and create length, pair your jeans with heels or other shoes that show off the top of the foot.
