Checks for Fall – Get Ahead of The Season Change

How to Wear Checks This Fall

An Autumn season staple that we always love to see is checks. And this year, they’re back bigger and better than ever.

Whether you’re doing checks, plaid, houndstooth, gingham or tartan, this fall we’re seeing the print everywhere from accessories to full-length coats. And they’re making a very stylish statement.

How to wear them? Get clashing. There’s really no wrong way to do it. If you prefer a simple look, go for a complete neutral outfit with a check or plaid accent. If you love to go bold, try several different patterns all in one look and don’t be afraid of clashing colorways.

If you’re into the check look for the season ahead but don’t know where to start, we’ve done the work for you. Here’s our top way to wear the check trend this fall.

The Shacket

Not heard of the shacket yet!?

Half shirt, half jacket, this lightweight yet cozy option is the perfect style for fall. And it’s huge popularity is one of the biggest reasons for the check trend this year.

Styling the shacket could not be easier. Because of its oversized and super slouchy fit, you can wear your shacket over pretty much everything else in your wardrobe. Layer it over your athleisure wear with leggings and sneakers or throw it over high waist mom jeans, chunky boots and a cropped hoodie. If you want to style it up a little more, keep it classic with simple black underneath. Go for leather pants and a black knit with heeled boots for a simple yet edgy vibe.

Oversized Check Shirts

Alongside the heavier shacket trend, we’re also seeing lots more classic flannel check shirts. The look? Oversized and super long. Get the oversized look even on a classic fit simply by sizing up.

A great way to get the right look is to go for menswear. We love these colorways on the print and with a larger men’s size it’s easy to achieve the oversized fit.

Again, everyone loves a flannel shirt for the same reason they love the shacket – they’re so easy to style!

Shirts are even easier to style because they’re such a great layering piece and the lightweight and warm fabric makes them super cozy. Wear them just like you’d style the shacket or even just throw it over your coziest sweats for the ultimate at-home Sunday vibes.

Check Mini Skirts

An autumn staple that’s stealing the show this season because of this trend is the check mini skirt. Such a great transitional look, check minis look great with bare legs while it’s still fairly warm and also just as good with black tights when the temperature drops.

We love a simple pencil skirt style or anything with detailing. Think wraps, pleats or integrated belt details.

Styling a check mini skirt for fall is one of our favorites because it’s such a fun look. And more versatile than you might think! Wear it with a fitted roll neck body suit, a tucked in white shirt or simple tee or even layer with an oversized knit or casual sweat shirt. It works in all scenarios.

For footwear, choose from anything from white sneakers to ankle boots or thigh high boots depending on how dressy you want to go. This season’s super chunky-soled black boots look great when worn with a check mini skirt. And very on-trend.

Check Coats

If you’re in the market for a new winter coat this year, you might want to consider opting for a check. Although they’re very on-trend for this season, it’s also just a really classic and cozy print that will last year after year. Plus, if you love color and pattern, it’s a great way to inject a touch of it into every outfit while keeping super warm and cozy in even the coldest months.

These are just a couple of our faves right now.

Check coats always look slightly dressier than something plain. It’s something to do with the heritage of the print. So, you really can style a check coat with anything. Dress up casual looks or pair yours with your most dressy winter dress and heeled boots outfit.

Oversized Check Scarf

The perfect fall accessory? The scarf! Plus, the perfect holiday gift!

This season, check scarves are HUGE in more ways than one. They’re a key trend piece for the season, yes. But they’re also literally huge too. Oversized scarves are in and we mean, the bigger, the better.

The reason oversized scarves look so good is because you can really use them as part of your outfit. Wrap them loosely and hugely around the shoulders of your coat to make a statement. Plus, if you go extra-large, you can even wrap them like a cape and add a waist belt to create a new look over a simple coat or jacket.

Check Bucket Hats

Bucket hats were huge this summer and we’re still seeing them for fall. If you’re not into woolly beanies, this could be your autumn accessory.

The classic go-to here is the Burberry original. But obvs, if you're looking for a more budget friendly options, we've found the perfect styles courtesy of Topshop!

Bucket hats are the ultimate casual accessory. Save them for your best off-duty looks and pair them with an oversized slouchy hoodie and mom jeans for the perfect Sunday brunch look.

Plaid PJs

Lastly – we just had to throw in our fave classic plaid PJs online right now from GAP. Super traditional and cute, if you’re not into wearing checks when you’re out and about, you’re still going to love curling up on the sofa in these! Pair them with a steaming mug of hot chocolate and you’re good to go through winter!
